The Integrated Carbon Observation System, ICOS, is a European-wide greenhouse gas research infrastructure. ICOS produces standardised data on greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, as well as on carbon fluxes between the atmosphere, the earth and oceans. This information is being used by scientists as well as by decision makers in predicting and mitigating climate change. The high-quality and open ICOS data is based on the measurements from over 168 stations across 16 European countries. Il Network di ICOS Italia consiste di 25 stazioni, di cui 15 per l’ecosistema, 5 l’oceano e 5 per l’atmosfera. Inoltre, ICOS Italia, insieme ad ICOS Belgio e Francia, ospita anche l’Ecosystem Thematic Centre (ETC). Le stazioni dedicate all’ecosistema coprono i territori più tipici dell’Italia: diversi tipi di foreste, campi coltivati, e macchie di arbusti. Le stazioni atmosferiche sono localizzate nel nord dell’Italia, come sulle Alpi, e nell’isola di Lampedusa, nel Mar Mediterraneo. Le stazioni che monitorano l’oceano sono situate nel Mar Adriatico e nel Mar Ligure. Nella rete italiana si trova l’Osservatorio integrato di Lampedusa, l’unica stazione in tutto il network che raccoglie simultaneamente informazioni relative ai tre domini di interesse.
