Euro-Argo ERIC

Argo-Italy is the Italian component of a global in situ observing system based on measurements with autonomous profiling instruments, called floats. OGS, as part of the Euro Argo ERIC, is funded by the Italian MUR (ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca), and it is primary responsible for coordinating the activities of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Argo Regional Center (MedArgo). A secondary focus includes the Southern Ocean, particularly the Ross Sea. The program supports the international Argo and Euro-Argo initiatives in long-term monitoring of the global ocean. It gathers data from within the ocean using a fleet of robotic instruments that drift with currents and move vertically between the surface and mid-water depths. Each float operates primarily below the surface for most of its lifespan. Argo-Italy is a cost-effective, long-term monitoring system that serves as a unique source of information for studying the role of the oceans—particularly the Mediterranean Sea—in the climate system. Additionally, it provides essential data for operational ocean monitoring and forecasting systems, significantly enhancing extended predictions of the atmosphere and oceans. Argo-Italy plays a key role in producing core marine products and downstream services for Copernicus, the European program dedicated to building Europe's Earth Observation capacity. It is also a vital part of GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems). This webpage includes OGS drifters and gliders, which are not part of Argo-Italy, but are managed within the same study area and provide additional FAIR data useful for science.
